US-EPA Encourages Homeowners to Care for Their Septic Systems during SepticSmart Week
WASHINGTON – Proper septic system care and maintenance is vital to protecting public health and preserving valuable water resources. During the first-ever SepticSmart
Week, September 23-27th, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is encouraging homeowners to take action to ensure their septic systems are functioning properly. Nearly one quarter of all American households—more than 26 million homes—depend on septic systems to treat their wastewater.
So let’s get septic smart together!

Preventative maintenance for any component in your home-be it the roof, lawn or appliances- is very important for a long lasting well-maintained home. Have you provided some form of routine maintenance in or around your home for the following?
- Changed your heating and/or air conditioning filters?
- Cleaned your gutters?
- Sprayed for termites and/or other pests around your home &garden?
- Seed and fertilize your lawn?
- Pump/clean your septic tank?
If you answered no for this last service then you are in for a big surprise.
Your septic system is your most utilized (and expensive) appliance/utility in your home so quality care & maintenance is very important. All your wastewater(showers, toilets, laundry, sinks, etc) leave your house and are processed thru your septic tank into your septic disposal area. Lack of care & maintenance can cause major issues both health & environmental such as backup of sewage into your main floor or basement.
Leaking sewage on the ground near where your children/pets or you walk & play can contaminate yours and/or your neighbors’ well water. And if you plan on selling your home this lack of maintenance or neglect of your septic system will be discovered at the time of a home and/or septic system inspection.
This could find you in violation of local health & state regulations which could jeopardize a possible real estate transaction for you & your family if a failed septic system is reported. So devote some time to care for your septic system-your most valuable, most expensive utility in your home.
Keep your septic system happy & healthy. In the long run it will keep your home, property and environment healthy & working well for many years to come.
