Septic Systems – Definition of SEPTIC TANK

Septic Systems Definition of SEPTIC TANK

: a tank in which the solid matter of continuously flowing sewage is disintegrated by bacteria
Sep-tic tank (noun)

Sep-tic tank main-te-nance (noun) 1: the act of maintaining: the state of being maintained: support 2:
something that maintains 3: the upkeep of property or equipment

Septic tank is a chamber that is designed to accept domestic waste water from originates from sinks,
showers, toilets, bathtubs, washing machines, dishwaters, etc. The tank acts like a filter utilizing inlet and
outlet baffles and flow restrictions causing separation of solids and liquids. The liquid (effluent) is then
discharged into a disposal area (drain field or leach field), seepage pits/tanks or trenches. The solids
remain in the septic tank in which organic material undergoes facultative and anaerobic decomposition.
The degree on decomposition depends on the retention time and the concentration of solids in the tank.
Over time depending on the degree of usage, inert sludge settles to the bottom of the tank. When the
sludge layer reaches a level that significantly degrades the decomposition process, the tank must be
pumped out. The entire tanks contents are pumped (removed)

Not pumping out the entire tank will do more harm than good. Make sure your septic contractor does a
complete pumping (liquids/effluent/debris and solids) Also have them do a visual inspection of the
working parts to the tank such as but not limited to: Inlet & outlet baffles are present and intact, locking
lids at ground-surface are maintained, Cleanout caps (if applicable) are intact, Effluent filter (if present)
is being properly maintained. Tank level and if there is any “run back” from inlet line and/or disposal
area.

A professional septic company should be able to provide a “eagle eye” to your septic tank when they are
onsite. They should alert you to any issues and/or concerns they may see as well as educate you on
septic care 101 and a preventative pumping maintenance schedule.
